So why is it called
 a State “Trunk” Highway?

"From Prairie of the Dog to Calatrava's Wings"

Click here for a map overview

Western terminus: Crawford County, on the Marquette Bridge over the Mississippi River in Prairie du Chien

Eastern terminus: Milwaukee County, at Lincoln Memorial Drive on Milwaukee's downtown lakefront

Mileage: about 183 miles

Counties along the way: Crawford, Grant, Iowa, Dane, Jefferson, Waukesha, Milwaukee

Sample towns along the way: Prairie du Chien, Fennimore, Dodgeville, Mount Horeb, Verona, Madison, Cambridge, Jefferson, Waukesha, Brookfield, Wauwatosa, Milwaukee

Bypass alternates at: Madison, Waukesha

Quickie Summary: U.S. Highway 18 is a "coast to coast" route from the Mississippi River to Lake Michigan. Along the way, you can enjoy scenic bluffs along Prairie du Chien, historical sites in Grant and Iowa Counties and the Blue Mounds before the trolls greet you in Mount Horeb. The highway skims Madison's south side (of course, a side trip is always fun into town) before hitting the a string of small towns: Cambridge, Jefferson, Sullivan, Dousman and Wales. U.S. 18 goes into the heart of Waukesha before heading through the very definition of suburbia in Brookfield and Wauwatosa. You skim the north end of Miller Park, leap across the Menomonee Valley gazing at Miller Brewing's original world headquaters, and hop around through Milwaukee's west side and Marquette University before hitting downtown Milwaukee. There, you go right past the Public Museum, tunnel under the convention center, head right past City Hall and under the state's tallest building before ending at Discovery World, the Summerfest Grounds and the iconic, world-renown Milwaukee Art Museum, featuring the moving wings designed by Santiago Calatrava. This is a great drive with a lot to see.
