So why is it called
 a State “Trunk” Highway?

"Double Dipping at the top of the State"

Click here for a map overview

Eastern terminus: Florence County, 2 miles east of Spread Eagle

Mileage: about 118 miles (104 on the western section, 14 on the eastern)

Counties along the way: Florence, Iron, Ashland, Bayfield, Douglas

Quickie Summary: U.S. Highway 2 runs the northern edge of the state - only Highway 13 goes further north for any appreciable distance, into the Bayfield Peninsula. Part of the original route from Seattle to Sault Ste. Marie, U.S. 2 dips into Wisconsin twice - once from just outside Iron Mountain, Michigan, through Florence (combined with U.S. 141 the whole way) and back into the U.P. for quite a while before re-entering the state after Ironwood, Michigan, going into Hurley. For just over 100 miles, U.S. 2 winds through Wisconsin's North Woods once again, hitting Ashland along the way before climbing into Minnesota's Iron Range at Duluth after running through Superior.

The Drive (East to West): Details will be posted shortly!
