Sample towns along the way: Madison, Cottage Grove, Lake Mills, Johnson Creek, Delafield, Brookfield, Milwaukee

Quickie Summary: State “Trunk” Highway 30 is a shell of its former self. Now a short freeway spur from I-39/90/94 to U.S. Highway 151 (East Washington Avenue), and continuing west as Aberg Avenue to the sprawling Kraft/Oscar Meyer plant at Highway 113, Highway 30 was THE main road between Madison and Milwaukee until I-94 was built in the 1960s. We'll look at the former highway and follow as much of it as possible so we can experience what getting between the two cities was like back in the '50s.

The Drive (West to East, a la 1955): Some of Highway 30's original routing is in service still; some of it is the actual path of today I-94. So, we'll follow it as closely as we can, using the original routing from the 1950s (the "Golden Era" of the road trip.)

Start in Madison's downtown along East Washington Avenue (U.S. Highway 151).

Looking west toward the Willow Glen Rd. exit (Exit 277) on I-94, this is where former Highway 30 (now County DR) joined the freeway when that stretch opened in 1963. The original road is on the left; no doubt, the "Madison" sign is an original...
